Text encoding and text processing

  • The source text to be encoded frequently reflects differences from current usage of the writing system
  • Text encoding usually has to cater to both stages:
    • it needs to faithfully record the way the text was originally written
    • it also needs to produce a version that is using todays orthography
  • In East Asia, todays orthography differs significantly in the four areas still using Chinese characters.
